We’ve long been Duplo fans in our house, having amassed quite a collection over the past few years. My children aged 5 and 6 still love it even though I’ve tried to steer them towards Lego as they get older. The Duplo Creative Cakes set is aimed at 2-5 year olds but that definitely wouldn’t stop my 6 year old spending hours playing with it! However, I decided to try the set out on (and donate it to!) my friends daughter who is just coming up to 3 years old as I felt she would get the most use out of it.
There are 55 pieces in the Creative Cakes set which include muffin tops, meringues, decorations and candles in attractive, bright colours. The chunky Duplo blocks are perfect for little hands to put together and the combinations of cake-making possibilities are endless, but in case your child (or you *ahem*) get stuck for inspiration, there’s a handy “recipe” booklet which shows you some ideas. One of the things we really liked was that the lid of the storage box doubles up a tea-tray, that’s a great use of packaging!
I’ve always found that Duplo encourages children into role play and the Creative Cakes set definitely does that. A whole afternoon was spent having make-believe tea parties. It’s nice to see how inventive children can be with the bricks and how different children build different things. If my daughter had her way, all the cakes would be made as per the instructions whereas my friends daughter, and my own son are much more likely to freestyle and make their own designs up – which is the beauty of Duplo, there’s no set way to do things so children can be as creative as they like.
I’ve always found Duplo extremely well-made and able to withstand a huge amount of abuse – the Creative Cakes set is no different! The Creative Cakes set was a big hit with the 6 year old and the 3 year old and would make a great present for any cake-loving little girl!
